I was told to put the suitcases through the X-ray machine, but still had my luggage inspected. Fortunately there was no problem, although it sounded as if the man ahead of me was having a discussion with the inspector over the fact that he had two laptops with him.Īs I said, I do not know if this was a special situation, but it certainly was an out of the ordinary experience. I was afraid that he was going to say that I was bringing in an excess of foreign merchandise not for personal use. I was a bit worried since my suitcase was full of gifts for my Mexican friends. He even asked to look in the passport pouch that I carry around my neck. The customs officer thoroughly searched my suitcase, backpack and camera case. It was not just a cursory inspection either. I do not know if Customs was on some sort of special alert that day, or if this is the new normal. There was no wait at all to go through Immigration (most likely due to the reduced number of tourists), but it seemed that everyone was having their luggage inspected at Customs. Upon my arrival here two days ago the situation was exactly the opposite. It has been years since I have been asked to open my luggage. (I have waited for as long as an hour.) On the other hand, customs inspection has been virtually non-existent. Upon arriving at the airport there is frequently a long line waiting to go through Immigration.
